How Do I Prepare for The Abortion Pill?

How Do I Prepare for The Abortion Pill?

If you’re pregnant and considering abortion, you’re likely aware of the abortion pill as an option. But before getting a medical abortion, there are some important things to confirm before taking the medication.

Medical Abortion Checklist

1. Be Certain YOu Are Actually Pregnant

This may seem obvious, but in the worry of the moment, it’s easy to assume or act before confirming your pregnancy through medical testing. A lab-quality pregnancy test followed by an ultrasound provides the most accurate confirmation.

You should never take the abortion pill unless pregnancy is confirmed, and it should always be taken under medical supervision. Self-administering the medication without medical oversight can increase physical risks and emotional stress.

2. Know the Status and Stage of Fetal Development

About 10–20% of known pregnancies end in miscarriage.¹ While a positive pregnancy test can indicate pregnancy, an ultrasound is essential to confirm the fetus’s viability, ensuring that the pregnancy has not miscarried and is not ectopic.²

Ultrasound imaging also determines the gestational age—or how far along you are. The FDA has approved the abortion pill for use only through 70 days (10 weeks) of gestation,³ making an ultrasound crucial to ensure you’re within this timeframe.

3. Make Sure THis is YOur Decision

Pregnancy and abortion decisions carry emotional weight and can affect every part of your life. You might feel pressure from a partner, friend, or family member—but this decision is yours alone.

No one can legally coerce or threaten you into having an abortion. If you ever feel pressured, you have advocates and legal protections on your side.

At Essential Pregnancy Center, we offer professional, safe, and confidential support to help you explore your options without judgment. Our caring team of Nurses is here to listen, provide clarity, and help you make a well-informed decision.

4. Know The Risks

An abortion is a medical procedure with physical, emotional, and spiritual implications. Understanding the risks ahead of time can protect your health and peace of mind.

It’s important to get tested and treated for sexually transmitted infections (STIs) before any abortion procedure. An untreated STI can spread when the cervix is opened during a surgical abortion, which can lead to complications such as Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID) or infertility.⁴

Abortion is also irreversible, so it’s essential to feel confident in your decision. Many women experience emotional distress afterward, including sadness, regret, or spiritual grief. Having support and counseling available before and after your decision can make a difference.
