When Did I Conceive?

So, you’re pregnant. But on what date did you conceive—and how can you know who the father is?

What Date Did I Conceive?

While there’s no exact science to pinpoint the precise moment of conception, your menstrual cycle offers clues that can help you closely estimate when it happened.

Whether you’re two weeks or twenty weeks into your pregnancy, there’s some simple math you can use to get a good idea of your conception window.

On average, women ovulate for two to three days per menstrual cycle. This is the short period when your body releases an egg and can become pregnant. Ovulation typically occurs about two weeks after the first day of your last period.

By counting from the first day of your last menstrual period, you can estimate your ovulation window—and therefore the likely range of days when conception occurred.

If that math feels overwhelming, you can always text (888) 791-0270 to have a Nurse walk you through how to calculate it or help you schedule an appointment for more clarity.

It’s important to remember that these dates are approximations. Every woman’s cycle is different—some ovulate earlier or later, and some have shorter or longer cycles.

It’s also possible to become pregnant from sex that occurs before ovulation begins. That’s because sperm can live inside the female body for up to five days, meaning sperm from earlier intercourse can still fertilize an egg once it’s released.¹ ²

Conception Date from Ultrasound

Another—and more accurate—way to determine when you conceived is through an ultrasound. Because fetal growth follows a consistent pattern, medical professionals can use specific measurements to estimate how far along your pregnancy is and when conception likely occurred.

An ultrasound also provides valuable medical information. It helps confirm that the pregnancy is viable (not miscarried) and not ectopic, meaning it’s developing safely within the uterus.³

You can have an ultrasound performed by your OB-GYN, but if you’d prefer a simpler, no-cost option, Essential Pregnancy Center offers free, limited, non-diagnostic, confidential ultrasounds without the need for hospital billing or insurance.
